I had another great session with Joey yesterday. Now I didn't get to a few questions because of time (he's a busy man and I'm an inquisitive person), but I wrote them all down so i can ask next session. We began by going over each question from the chapter quiz, then proceeded to give me several examples to help me further understand compression/limiters. One of them was an old Uhaul truck he had rented before. It had a governor/restrictor on it's engine that wouldnt allow the truck to go over 55mph no matter how much he pressed the gas pedal. The next example he used was a pepsi commercial. The commercial starts out with the speaker whispering, and as the commercial goes on, his excitment and enthusiasm grows which makes his voice grow louder, but on TV, everything sounds even the whole time which is due to compression. Joey then took me into a few different rooms to show me different examples of gate. He played some drums to demonstrate how each piece can have its own gate to open up and allow that speciffic sound through to minimize picking up sounds from other pieces. Then, he showed me an amp and how it buzz's untill the guitar is played, and how someone reading from a piece of paper, the gate is opened when the person speaks. If they pause to turn the page, the sound of paper turning will not get picked up. But if he turns the page while talking, the sound will get picked up. We talked about thresholds, ratios, attack, release, and knees. It was another great, informative lesson!

This was another good lesson with Uncle Joey. Honestly, I feel like this chapter should have been a lot earlier in the curriculum, but nonetheless, there was some great information which will be very helpful when creating a home set-up... Read More >>
