Chapter 14: Dynamic Signal Processing Posted on 2014-03-25 by Kevin Peacock

Here we are once again and let’s jump right in. DYNAMIC SIGNAL PROCESSING or in other words COMPRESSORS. My mentor was so excited about this lesson and is actually his favorite. Based on our intense conversation and demonstrations  I see why he favors this lesson. In my own words I would say that with so many different levels  of audio in a mix a compressors brings everything together in a major way. The way it can take a whisper and not only make it loud enough to hear but without changing your radio or speaker volume is amazing. It doesn’t matter if its digital or analog, compressors are equivalent one of your favorite swiss army knife attachments.

GATES: are in the same family as compressors but with its own unique purpose. Long story short:  COMPRESSORS are auto volume control and GATES area auto mute switch. The best way to envision this is with drum recordings and  you want  to keep a certain sound from bleeding into another on a track. Both of these tools are just another set of weapons to add to your mixing arsenal. The next lesson covers Time Based Effects and the journey continues. STAY TUNED
