Chapter 15: Time Based Effects Posted on 2014-03-25 by Kevin Peacock

As my journey continues in learning the process of mixing, the next destination is Time Based Effects. These types of effects are things like reverb and delay which can change the perception of sound(s). DELAY is what you get when you hear your voice after yelling in a canyon. One example in a song is when a rapper has a word or some words do a repeat after he says it. There are many creative ways to use delay but this is probably the most common.

REVERBS are so simple in terms of understanding what it actually is. We hear this pretty much every day and I think it’s safe to say that our bathroom shower is the best place to envision this. That’s right, your singing in the shower and the way your voice sounds is reverb. Another example would be a church when the choir is singing. Like I said reverb is very easy to understand and as an engineer it’s a great tool to widen vocals or anything you desire. At the end of the day all of the tools for mixing audio really boil down to the engineer ear, knowledge and creativity.
