Lesson 13 Posted on 2013-06-14 by Michael Ingram

We discussed the use of compressors and what they do.  Basically, adjust the levels or volumes of a sound.  By adjusting the threshold and ratio, you can can blend or even the different sounds so that it is equal with one another.  Depending on how the ratio is is set, a compressor may act as a limiter.  This will in turn prevent a sound from going over a specific volume.  Threshold, as I mentioned before, is the point where the compressor will start to work and the ratio determines the amount of volume that will be applied.

We also went over the functions of a noise gate.  These are used mostly when micing instruments.  If set properly, certain sounds will only be captured at certain volumes so that the MIC will not pick up any unwanted sounds.
