This past lesson was on time based effects - delay, reverb, and modulation. I've known what they do to guitar sounds from years of using them with guitar effects pedals, but I never really understood how they actually worked until now. I also didn't know that when applied more subtlely, they could really bring a mix to life. I've been saying to my mentor that my mix assignment didn't sound "real" to me; like, I couldn't imagine it coming out of any audio source than my computer. But after adding some reverb to the vocals (and a cool delay effect at the end of the song), a dash of short delay to the one snare track, and some chorusing on one of the guitar tracks, suddenly everything "popped" more! It finally sounded like a "real" recording!
