After careful thought and deliberation, I've decided to continue my education with the Recording Connection rather than try and break into the business with just the skills/knowledge/tools I have. The Basic Audio Engineering course gave me a wealth of knowledge on the science and technology involved in modern musical production as well as some fun and educational experiences at the studio with my mentor and his clients, but in the end all I really have to show to potential clients of my own is the audio I've mixed primarily using pre-recorded tracks from the curriculum and the extra credit work in the eBook. One of the things I learned in the basic course is that a great recording starts with a good tracking session and proper mic selection, which I cannot claim as having done myself on those tracks, regardless of how well I've mixed them. Plus, if I were in the client's position I'm not sure how confident I'd be in someone who demostrated great skill in mixing but hasn't tracked anything. I don't want to be in the same position I was in when I started in the workforce in general - no experience, so no one was willing to hire me until after I took some low-level temp jobs.
The Advanced Audio course will give me a chance to address those issues. So, onward!
