Lesson Two Studio Design and Monitors
Reading the chapters for lesson two I started to wonder why the pages jumped from 73 to 538 but it was an interesting read. I did however have a challenge understanding the difference between active and passive speaker systems before meeting with Stan. I was kind of afraid to answer any of the questions only for the fact it seemed he was thinking I was stupid so when I went down I was skeptical how the day was going to go and I was questioning if this was right for me.
In lesson two we went around the control room and studio while he asked me questions, what all I know about acoustic isolation, symmetry, frequency balance, reflections, absorptions, and reverberation. He gave examples of what standing waves, diffusers, bass traps, and spectral analyzer are and how they play a part in acoustic isolation.
Then after answering question about speakers he broke the terminology down and described passive and active as if I was to hit a wall, where active would hit on contact, passive doesn’t hit at all, moves on. This helped me sort of understand the differences and I found out they use a passive two way system that runs from an amp.
I was told to read and read the chapters over and over because I did not quite the terms off hand. I apologized
I asked what the best speakers to use were and Stan spoke wise words in saying an analogy of ice cream, some like chocolate, some like strawberry, I like vanilla so it’s a decision you make and what best fits you and the kind of music you are into.
In my mind I was thinking oh boy what did I get myself into, I didn’t think I was cut out for this and I was dreading getting answers wrong on the next lesson but I am hopeful and willing to learn.
