I had just started buying mics and cables that I would need for a home studio set up since I know I will be getting ProTools 11 any day now, right Recording Connection? ;) but didn't really know which preamp to invest in. I spent the better part of this session asking Jake questions about home studio set ups, preamps, condensor mics, phantom power, control boards, snakes, etc. Ideally I want to have the capability to mic electric guitar amps with condensor/dynamic combinations, a full drum kit, acoustic guitar, and vocals. I would need 4 SM57s, 2 overheads (sm81 or AKG414), a bass drum mic which I haven't decided which one to get yet, and basically another vocal mic If i wanted to get a more distinct sound out of the vocals since ill be using an AKG414 on the guitars and or drums. I'm thinking the new Phantom Powered Ribbon Mic, Nuvo 22 by AEA.
Next I would need the preamp. Since I use an iMac I figure it best to get one with a USB Interface. I'd need phantom power and at least 8 inputs so I can mic a full drum set. After doing some research I found the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R USB Interface. Compatible with ProTools 11 ;) and has phantom power for a very affordable price: $399.
Can't wait to start tracking!
