This week I was able to sit in on a Mastering Session while Mark mastered a rap and R&B track for two different clients. I was taught different ways to master depending on how the track is recroded and mixed by the artist and engineers. He showed me how to either brighten a track if it is too dark, or make a track darker if it is too bright, he also showed me how to make the track as loud as the competitions tracks.
I was able to sit in on a mixing session for a rock client. In this Mark showed us how to balance tracks to the style of music, as well as how to use parallel compression through an outboard compressor and a patch bay to make the drums hit harder and stand out in the track. I was also showed how to balance the instruments to make the grove stand out over instruments that may not be as important in the track. I was shown how to EQ using the SSL board as well.
