Week One Lesson Posted on 2014-11-25 by Andrew Langdon

Went over chapter one with Joe.  Touched upon some vague basics of equiptment in studio and discussed my goals related to producing/engineering.  Went over some of the basics of ProTools; how to set up session, create tracks etc.  Looked at previous session and compared dry tracks to their mixed tracks.  Went over basics of plug ins and effects used on track (vocals, guitar etc.) Went to drum tracking session at different studio with one of Joes clients.  Went over mic placements and sat in on session.  Observed Joe's interaction with clients and his recording process to ensure he gets enough solid takes to work with, giving himself and the band options in the mixing/editing process.  Guitarist recorded acoustic track along with drums as well as scratch vocal for reference.  Overall, learned a little bit about tracking process-mainly to make sure that you get enough solid takes to work with.  Also, learned the importance of recording/tracking instruments as close to the way you want it to sound in the end to reduce overproduction and maintain integrity of music.  Great week.
