Skrillex - Recess album review Posted on 2014-03-17 by Steven Wellington

I love it, not as much as his Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP but it's great in it's own way. In a way, I don't even want to compare it to that. Because it's just different. It's something great and something else. What's great about Skrillex is he's making the music he likes to hear. He's not really going off anything else. Which makes it a little ridiculous when someone tries to sound like Skrillex, because if they were really trying to sound like him, they wouldn't be trying to sound like him because he doesn't try to sound like other artists. He goes for his own sound. And his sound is constantly evolving. Bangarang was very different from Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, his EP, Leaving was different and his latest album, Recess is very different from all of these. Even his stuff before Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites that he released as Sonny Moore is very different. It's a lot lighter. That's one thing I love about Skrillex. His stuff is constantly evolving. He evolves better than any artist I know. I don't know what his next album will sound like.

One of the first thoughts I had when I listened to Recess was "this would sound great at a rave." It certainly gives off a rave feel which I'm sure is what he was going for since he's constantly touring. (I once read he performed 300 shows a year. That was when he was 24. He's 26 now.)

My favorite song on the album is Stranger, giving me the coolest weirdest feelings with extremely good mastering, as is with this whole album-very well mastered. It sounds clear and professional.

I love this album. I do in general feel though, that most people will like it less than Scary Monsters and Bangarang if they like it at all, for a few reasons. One-It sounds like it is more aimed to be listened to at a rave and two-It's different. I feel like I'll like it more as I listen to it more and become accustomed to the new style. When I first heard Skrillex, I didn't care for him. It took me a while to get accustomed to his music. Most of my favorite artists/albums are that way. I have to listen to them a few times before I get accustomed to the sounds. Now Skrillex is my favorite artist.

Because of the innovative style and mastering (the two things that stick out to me on this album in particular), among other things, I'd give this album a 5/5 stars and I consider myself to be pretty picky with music.
