Today my mentor and I went over the fundamentals of mixing. We talked about finding the correct levels with faders and the panning to create a wide or narrow sound. For instance you can choose to pan a drum kit realistically to how it'd be set up in real life or, you can leave them all centered for a more aggressive style of space with the focus on the center. He told me a rough mix of just volume and panning should only take about 15 min. I should also use the clip gain feature in Pro Tools to quickly balance uneven audio signals rather than rely on overcompressing a sound.
