Lesson 3 – Digital Audio

Today was a good day. The chapter we went over was chapter 3… “Digital Audio”. Chapter 3 was all about understanding how digital audio works, is created and differs from analog. Digital audio is a marvelous achievement. I learned what bit rate and sample rate is and how it affects digital audio. It works similar to the frame rate in a video camera or video file. And since I’m also a video guy, it was somewhat easy to understand.

After talking to Phil about the chapter, we went into Pro Tools to see how we could manipulate the bit rate and Sample Rate. You see, bit rate and sample rate has to do with the quality of the audio. The higher the sample rate or bit rate, the higher the quality. There’s a “con” though. If you raise the sample or bit rate, the audio file will be much larger when it comes to taking up space. (Kilobytes, megabytes, Gigabytes and all that stuff). There is a way to change the sample rate and bit rate in pro tools so you can work with the quality of audio you want.

Josquin later gave us some projects to work on for the rest of the class session. It was exciting because I was working on a real project that one of Josquin’s clients had recorded. I was a little nervous too because I knew this had to be done right and I had to be as efficient and as fast as I could. Time is money. In the end everything came out good. Thank God.
