Lesson 6 - Mic Placement

This week was an interesting week. First off, everything started with my class session on Tue. I went in and met up with Phil to go over the chapter I had finished. It was about mic placement. Mic placement is rather important when it comes to audio engineering. Good mic placement could make your life so much easier as an audio engineer, but a bad mic placement could also be a cause for a disastrous recording. With that said, I learned that there aren’t really any set rules for mic placement but there are a couple of methods and guidelines that can help out depending what your recording and what type of sound you expect to achieve. So we went through all that stuff during the class session and after we were done, we got to work on some things on Pro tools. Oh, by the way, this week I got my own copy of Pro Tools. I know, cool huh! But I do got to say one thing… They sure make it difficult to download and install it! Anyways… I got to work on some vocals. We pitched the parts of the vocals that were out of key with a plug-in they have at the studio… I believe it called wave tuner. It was pretty fun…. I MEAN! *Clearing throat* “It was hard work!” It was a successful day if I do say so myself. I enjoy going to the studio, I like how the ambience isn’t so stressful. Yet it’s still Professional. Later during the week, I went in for open sessions. It’s interesting to see the workflow of the Producer and engineer while they work with the client’s. It’s funny cause this lady came is for studio time and wanted to record some songs. Now, something to note is that this lady is a performing singer. She’s not a recording artist. So the producer was telling us that he just wanted to get over with this and it seemed like he wasn’t too thrilled about having to work with someone who didn’t know how to work in a studio. But once the lady got there and we started recording, well…. All I can say is, we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. She sang beautifully and she did a pretty good job in the studio. It’s awesome that I can experience these types of real world occurrences in a real studio while I’m still a student. So far I am really enjoying this program!
