Week 5 Blog Recording Nova Posted on 2013-10-15 by Tim Schumann II

This week was escpecially exciting in the Studio. Over the last few weeks I have spent time sitting in on sessions ranging from recording to mixing and even a mastering session. For the most part though it was all just observing and picking up pieces of information as they came along.

but this week was something special. Instead of my normal monday 2 hour session with the Lead Engineer Phil I was given the opportunity to engineer a recording session. We were recording a couple songs for a company called Teletunes, who publishes music for TV channels. The Vocalist in the studio was a girl named Nova, and WOW she could sing. It was a great first experience for recording a vocalist because she was very proffesional and there werent to many issues that arose.

The session began by setting up a Neumann TLM 103. This is the studios 1st choice for vocal and acoustic instruments. The next step was setting up the proper tracks within the pro tools session. which included: A Record Track, A Lead Vox Track, A Lead Harm Track, and 4 Harm tracks meant to be used for oohs and aahs throughout the song. Next I set up Reverb AUX channel that was assigned to a bus and applied to all of the channels.

After Nova ran through the full track as we adjusted the Pre Amp settings we began to hit the track in sections. We began with the Verses, first recording the Lead and then recording the Verse Harmonies. After this we recorded a Chorus follwed by the Chorus Hamrony. We then simply copied and pasted the Chorus recordings to the the 2nd Chorus. After we were done with this we recorded four tracks that were Ooohs and Aaahs to be placed under neath the Chorus Leads and Harms.

We repeated this process for the 2nd song and after the recording session was over. Myself and the engineer began the process of tightening up the vocals. We used 3 different VST's for this process.

1: Vacalign-We used Vocalign to take small pieces of the audio and line them up with their Hamonies.

2. Auto Tune-We used Auto Tune on every track with the same settings so that all tracks had the same amount of variation from the original source audio.

3. Waves Tune - We used Waves Tune to fix single notes that Auto Tune could not correct without sounding a little robotic #TPAIN! Using this program we had to create a new record track, Correct the notes inside of the program and rerecord the corrected audio into a new smaple before applying the new sample to the original track, ie Lead Vox, Lead Harm, Harm 1, 2, 3, or 4.

In closing this was an amzing experience inside the studio.
