The Fine Details Posted on 2015-12-09 by Jason Abranches

Starting off with chapter 1, I found a ton of useful information that helped me form a much better understanding of music and sound. I knew sound had to do with vibrations, and being a guitarist I've heard of harmonics and knew how to play them, yet still did not understand the physics of compression of air molecules or exactly what all created the timbre of each instrument. I found it extremely interesting how the physics of sound follow mathematical patterns and that two frequencies can even cancel eachother out entirely. Besides the technical knoledge i gained in waveform characteristics, amplitude, different frequencies, harmonics and overtones, different decibel scales, types of reflections, phasing techniques, simple VS complex waveforms, the anatomy of the ear, psycoaccoustics, stereo imaging, and spacing, what I really took out of this lesson is EVERY DETAIL MATTERS. Even to the slightest degree, if I want to produce the best sounding track possible I must take into account everything in my enviornment. The temperature of the room, the TYPE of room Im in along with the materials around me as I record, even down to the mood of my musicians performing. This is an art, and to be successful sloppiness is not the key. The more factors I take into account to produce a certain feeling or mood to compliment the music, the better job I am doing and the better my work will naturally be.

To accompany my understanding of the basic physics music I have been studying "How Music Works", a very informative and entertaining book by David Byrne. This basic root knoledge of sound, perceived sound, and how it all works not only helps me as a musician but even more as an aspiring audio engineer. I can't wait for my first studio lesson tomorrow afternoon and to see how a professional breaks this all down and truely applies all these concepts.
