So many mics Posted on 2016-05-09 by Caroline Bokman

This chapter was all about microphones, from carbon to condenser to dynamic to ribbon. How they work, what they sound like, when to use them. So many brands/ types! At least a have a foundation of what to look for when deciding which to use, and of course, industry standards will see me using some of the more configure-able ones all the time. I will know which way to point them now, and how they will pick up sound, and can refer to frequency range charts to help me decide what to use. It's a lot to remember, but yes, overview is a good starting point! I believe we will be positioning mics in class this week, so that will also help....Can I hear the difference between them? Yes, some I can, depends if they are used correctly, too, of course, some have specific needs as far as preamps or need more resistance, to make them sound decent at all, and many of them accentuate or roll off certain frequencies....and some will be better for certain instruments/ voices than others, but will sound the same for other applications. Like I said,it's a lot to know, and experience will train me up better than reading about them!

How can you make certain things shine, even focus or blend? What are all the tools we have? How do we use them? What the the usual things people who mix do? What are the creative things people have come up with? So it begins... Read More >>
