This week we are covering studio plots/ planning/ prep for a session/ tracking. As with anything, lots of careful setup will make things go smoothy, and the more people/ instruments you deal with, the more can go wrong, and the more planning is necessary to make things go smoothly. Lots of things in a studio are hard-wired and ready to go, the final preparations depend on the configuration you are working with. Setting up what you think you will need taking into consideration the limitations you have (how many mics/ how much space/ how many tracks/ how much time) is the work. Keeping good records of the setup and getting as much info in advance helps with the planning. There were some good rules of thumb in the chapter about what to put where, and what mic to use for what, but experience will be the best teacher, no doubt.
As for the classroom, we finally started to learn the Protools interface, starting with the first and most basic buttons. I have used other softwares before, it's just a matter of mapping " What it does" to it's new place in the new software, and learning what more I didn't know about before, because I never got very far before in any of them. This is where having a guide is going to make all the difference from trying to teach yourself from a book or youtube videos...
