Back after a week off spent in the studio recording an album with my band, Zack and I dove into mix theory. After covering the basics, we hopped onto Youtube and grabbed a handful of songs--both old and new--and started to analyze them in Pro Tools to get an idea of the "shape" of each song and how a common modern mix might look. We ran the songs through a frequency analazer, a phasescope, and meter bridge. This gave me a good reference point for what I should be aiming for in my own mixes, though there was variation between the songs we looked at.
