My 4th Lesson at Fastback Studios was another unique experience for me. This time, we were actually recording a small in-studio concert with the local indie folk-rock band Cloud Person. Not only did we have the 5 person band set up in our live room, but we also had about 20-30 other people in the live room watching the performance. Our job in the control room of the studio was to record the audio of the session, and we had another group there that was recording the video of the performance.
To put it plainly, the performance itself was surreal. The melodic-meloncholic music produced by these 5 individuals was both haunting and liberating at the same time. At certain points throughout their performance, I found myself in an almost ecstatic trance, unable to move, speak, or even think. The band has a way of building the tension in the room so subtly and beautifully, that you may find yourself holding your breath until you almost lose consciousness.
As many of the band members played multiple instruments and sang, it was my job to keep track of who was playing which instrument, as well as who was singing, for each of their songs. It was a fun responsibility to have, and it showed me a little more about how much goes into a recording session. I feel very greatful to have been a part of this, and I can't wait to have more opportunities such as this.
