Peace & love y'all. A couple weeks back when I got together with my mentor (Doug Wallace) he had a potential student come in to shadow one of our sessions. His name is Karin, and Doug told me that he was interested in hip-hop. Being a hip-hop artist myself, he thought I was the perfect candidate for Karin to shadow.
I had a record that my hip-hop duo (The Hashassins) had been working on & I mixed it down to the point where we were happy enough with it to be released; but we thought that getting it mastered by a professional would bring it all together & give it the final polish that it needed. & who better to go to than my own mentor? So we ended up working on that for the session that Karin came in for.
Karin barely had any knowledge about audio production, but he is an aspiring hip-hop artist so that's how he became interested in joining the Recording Connection. I talked to him about being a hip-hop artist and gave him some advice about being in the studio & tracking for your first time; since he's never recorded before. He seems like a chill kid and he had the confidence to show me some of the stuff he was working on right there in the studio, so he earned my respect.
Once we got into the mastering of my record we started to talk to Karin about some of the basics of audio production, and I could tell that he was a little overwhelmed. It reminded me of my first time in the studio and everything felt so new & confusing. It really is a lot to take on at first, and it had me thinking about how far I've came. I couldn't be happier with the choice I made coming to the Recording Connection. I love what I do & can't wait to break into the industry as a new, eager sound engineer.
I asked Doug the other day if he's heard from Karin, but nothing. I was hoping he would take on the challenge & sign up to have Doug as his mentor. But only time will tell. Until next time y'all. One love!
