Last weeks lesson taught me about mic placement and what mics to use for certain instruments. I also learned about stereo miking and the different ways to set up the mics. I had observed a recording session with a band the week before so it was nice to get an idea of mic selection and placement prior to my lesson about it. When I went in for my lesson, Tom brought up that bands session on protools and showed me what each individual track sounded like and showed me some simple equalizing techniques to reduce bleed with the drums.
I came into interning during a recording session with a composer named Jack who I had observed a few weeks earlier. The session was with my mentor, Tom. They worked on a few songs for the play Jack wrote for a play he was doing the music for. He recorded a few songs on a keyboard, which Tom recorded in sections on his MPC to quantize it before he sent it to protools. He also added some simple drums from his MPC by recording just a single drum sound and making the beat on protools.
