Chapter 14 Dynamic Signal Processing Posted on 2014-05-22 by Katelyn Smith

What decade was the first commercially available compressor released? 50's

Bill Putnam was the designer of the first commercially available audio compressor.

Modern ANALOG recording is a method of recording where signals are stored as a continual wave in or on the media, usually magnetic tape.

DIGITAL recordings sound signals are converted and stored as binary data.

Compressor reduces dynamic range!

Expander increases dynamic range.

Threshold is the decibal point at which compression is initiated.

A compression ratio of 100:1 would be considered LIMITING.

RATIO determines the amount of gain reduction of a compressor.

ATTACK determines how quickly compression will initiate after the threshold is breached!

RELEASE determines how quickly gain reduction is reset after the signal drops back below the threshold.

DE-ESSER= is used to remove sibilance.
