This past month, my mentor has had me mixing a copy of a song he was working on. He was very pleased with how much progress I've made so far. I've honestly learned a lot more about doing things while I'm in the studio. He showed me how to do comps by creating playlists so I don't have to have 30 tracks of the same thing. I learned a lot about automating plugins. At the end of the song, there was kind of a fade out of stringed instruments. I was trying to think of a way to kind of make it darker. The goal of me doing this was he didn't want me to try and make this song sound like his. He wanted me to try and give it a different sound. So I went with a darker, spookier sound. I wasn't sure how to do what I was hearing to I asked my mentor for a little push. He pushed me in the right direction and I got what I wanted. I had the strings almost sound like they were slowing down and dropping in pitch, like on a record player if you put your finger on the vinyl and made it spin slower. He was actually impressed and liked it a lot. He liked it so he jokingly said he was going to steal it from me.
