Tonight Kris and I went over the first lesson, Introduction to Sound and Hearing. It was a very interesting lesson. Just the fact that we can hear only two different sounds and our brain/ears perceive it as three or four is amazing. Kris and I went over Waveforms, Pitch, Sound intensity, Beats, Masking, and combination tones. The most interesting part was the Beats-combination tones. I learned that the preferred mixing volume is around 85-95 dB. Which isn’t that loud but it is as loud as you need it for mixing. If you have the mixing volume too loud you could end up with some gain problems once you finish and playback on another device. If the volume is to low it may not have the sound quality you want at higher volumes such as not enough bass or highs etc. We also had a guy over, Dan was his name I think, to do some bass and vocal work. No one actually played the bass at this session but what Kris did was rerecord the bass by playing it through a very nice bass amp he had just gotten. The bass originally was recorded using an Up-Right bass and wasn’t all that punchy or bassy for that fact so we ran it through the amp to give it the punch and bass it needed. Then Kris started to work on some of the vocal parts with Dan but soon decided that it was enough for tonight and we called it a night.
