Tonight was very interesting. Kris and I went over lesson two which was about Studio monitors and Acoustic designs. The more you spend on monitors the better they say. There isn’t much to learn about monitors other than what type to buy and whether or not to buy active or passive ones. You can buy Nearfield or Farfield monitors, both of which come active and passive. The only difference in active and passive is that the active ones have a built in power amp which means they have their own power and need no power amp. The passive ones will need some form of amp to push them. It wont need to be huge but enough to push everything. On another note acoustic design is something a lot of people don’t think about. The design of a room is very crucial to the sound of the room. You wouldn’t want a room with tons of echo because the sound would be everywhere. It seems as if the best type of sound for a control room in a studio would be a dead sound. Which means that the sound travels nowhere. There isn’t any echo or reverb, just plain sound. Live rooms have a very rich and warm sound. After the lesson we did some mixing/mastering on some tracks for a local blues band. It was very interesting and it was a very talented band.
