Stop. Close your eyes. Hold your breath. And listen.
Every small sound, every sonic experience we have whether at a drowning level like a train passing by on the other side of the road, or the most subtle of sounds such as the clicks and hums of components in your air conditioner cooling your home are all parts of our collective life experiences thanks to many factors that are environment and biology working together. The fact that we are at a point in human history where we not only understand the science of how sound is created and able to travel through space, but we also can map out exactly how it is interpreted by our brain is an amazing example of how far we have come in understanding why music is so important to every culture in the human race.
I think that this chapter is an excellent primer for guaging interest in the recording arts. In order to truly appreciate our love for recording, production, broadcast and performance I believe it is essential to understand the most basic concepts that allow for the existence of such arts. I have been reassured through reincorfced understanding these foundational aspects of sound that this is the right path for me.
Anyone who is ever insterested in discussion of these concepts please contact me. I believe sharing experiences, information and opinions sharpens the skills and understanding of everyone involved in the recording arts!
