Chapter 01 - Journey Begins Posted on 2018-02-19 by Wajira Amarakoon

For many years it has been my dream to get involved in music from the perspective of an Audio Engineer. Being on stage with friends and playing the music that inspired us has been the most satisfying feeling in my life, yet I couldn't help but wonder about the chair which made everything we created heard to the world. My fascination in the art and tech that captured an instrument and sound to deliver it to the world in a way that influenced everyone who had the chance to get a glimpse of that creation always kept me interested to pursue that path. So, this is where I start the journey to the world behind the curtain of music that inspires so many lives.

Sound and hearing comes as such simple terms our whole lives yet so much factors work in mysterious ways to deliver anything that we hear every day. With the first chapter I was able to put the pieces together in understanding the fundamentals. How sound is generated and what factors affect the making of a sound and how the human ear and brain work together to perceive it. I was astonished by these facts and it really opened my eyes (or should I say ears) to the mechanisms in play.

For the first time I entered the studio of my mentor Kris as a student to review the initial chapter of the curriculum. I got the grand tour of the studio, the control room, vocal, guitar, drums and piano rooms and the cool gear that made it a special place. Further we talked about how frequencies are heard over a sound system using a sine wave. I learned that over time our ears lose the hearing capabilities. So, we explored through the range of frequencies in different volumes to identify the sensitivity of our ears at this stage. I had an amazing time and I grow in to the world of audio by every moment.
