It almost seems like connectivity is the most important aspect of being organized in the studio with all the gear and being ready to get the work done effectively and efficiently. Kris has a military grade patch bays setup in the studio. Which gives easy access to all the rooms and effect racks. Connections are hard wired on the back of every patch bay. Room panels, Mic ins, Line ins, Aux sends, Effects, Channel ins and Outs. I can imagine Pro Tools workflow coming out in analog when I go through the paths laid out from the patch bays. Mostly balanced ¼ cables are being used to route connections on the patch bay.
Peeking in to the back of every piece of gear shows what kind of cables run in and out of them. Kris let me unplug and look at most of the different types of cables around the studio. Patch bay legend came as confusing at first. But more I look at how Kris unplug and plug the patch bay made it clear every time.
I got the chance to assist Kris with his production of a radio and TV call-in show of coach Jimbo Fisher at the Four Points by Sheraton. He took me through the whole process of connecting the broadcast equipment and running lines to PA and TV network WTXL ABC 27. We used CAT 5 connection to receive and send the signal to Radio Station using Comrex Access 2USB, a Mackie 1402VLZ3 Mixer to mix the program, Oz audio Q-mix HM-6 to mix the headphones, And Comrex Matix for POTS/ISDN. It was interesting to see behind the scenes on a live TV/Radio program and get involved in that process.
