Lesson 4
Thursday, January 10, 2013
On Thursday, January 10, 2013, I went to the studio for my lesson 4 session about microphone basics design and use. I really liked this session because it was more hands on and I was able to see a variety of different types of microphones that my mentor has. We went over the different polar patterns and he tested me on what microphones I think would best suit a certain studio setting or recording. He showed and described certain microphones like the ElectroVoice RE27, Rode NT1, Sennheiser 421 and the MXL V63M to name a few. We also briefly went over the example of miking a drum kit and confronting phase issues. So he showed me how the mics should be angled, or at least what the recommended angle and placement between the mics should be, in order to avoid any phase problems. With the microphones that he showed me, he would ask me for what I thought I would use them for and it was a great way to have a better understanding of when and where to use mics. It helped me to better understand the polarities and the placement of microphones for an instrument(s). I think this was a great session in which I learned a lot. I’m anxious to start miking up instruments!
