Journal Entry #6
Max Casco, Recording Connection
Lesson 6-7
Monday, February 18, 2013
This journal is a combination of lessons 6 and 7 as they are two parts of the lesson on the console. In these lessons I learned a lot in regards to the functions of the console and more signal flow. My mentor and I scheduled this session on Thursday, January 27, 2013 at 10:00 am. We started going over the quiz and he helped me with any questions that I had in regards to the console. After this, he took me over to the console and started better explaining what I had learned or at least what was covered in these lessons on his console. He showed me what the functions of an individual channel were and how you could control the signal through it either by having the signal flow right through the channel if no desired effect or bus is added, and how to divert a portion of that signal to other busses/effects. He then took me over to the back of the console and showed me how he had his connections set up. He showed me how everything was connected to his patch bays and from there how everything routed out to the different external plugins.
The following Thursday, January 31, 2013, Mike, the owner of Brixton Studios, located on the second floor, needed some LP transfers to be done. I was able to get that afternoon off work so I let Chris know that I would be available and both he and Mike agreed on letting me do the transfers. I came in that afternoon and Chris had everything set up for me as he wasn’t in. I took the signals from the patch bays (which came from the console) and routed them to the right input jacks, which in this case, went into ProTools on the computer. I was able to transfer two albums; one from Elvis Presley and the other from Kenny Burrell using a Technics SL-BD20D. It wasn’t anything too difficult as we had already went through the process of these types of transfers, but I was just glad I was able to get in a few hours in the studio on my own and being able to use some of the gear.
Once the transfers were on the computer, there wasn’t much editing that they needed me to do just yet as they only wanted them transferred onto the computer. This was a great experience for me as it was a great feeling just being in the studio doing real work and being able to use the gear.
