Allusion Studios Lesson 1: Sound and Hearing Posted on 2014-05-05 by Jonathan Havenhill

All of the following Blog entries will be about my experiences in the Recording Connection:Sound Enginneering program where I am apprenticing for Jim Pevett at Allusion Studios in Tucson, AZ.

My first session with Jim went quite well! Having taken some physics classes prior to this course, this chapter came to me quite naturally. At least the first half. The insight in Section:3 to the human ear and the human hearing experience was quite interesting. It really shows the power of evoltion and nature here. The way that the human ear has been fined tuned for centuries to the asterpiece that it is today to distinguish sounds and locate the sound origin. Our brains also allow us to be able to assign titles to the sounds we hear, such as the name of the instrument playing the note, or the note being played, so when we hear it again, we can identify it. It's really quite something!

In the studio we went over this chapter in detail and then we re-did my hearing test on the studio monitors to really pinpoint where my hearing full cuts out, which is at about 17500Hz.After completing the first lesson, I asked Jim if there was anything else I could do around the studio to maybe help out with or be apart of. I was excited to hear that there would be a band comprised of some local top notch musicians coming in to track some acoustic guitar, vibraphone, and steel drums for the record they are currently producing with Jim and that I would be able to sit in on the session. It was incredible to say the least. Being a percussionist and a drummer in a local band here in Tucson, I have been on the other side of the recording process a fair amount of times tracing drums, but being behind the baords is a completely different experience and I'm fascinated by it.

After the session Jim and I took some time to simply clean and organize in the studio together, (something that ust be done in order to keep the studio in nice condition). In order to have a nice studio, you must tae care of it and of all your equipment. We also set the rooms up for another session that would be taking place later in the week. During this time we talked about music in general and different instruments. It's pretty cool that he and I are both percussionist because it gives us something in common to have fun taling about as far as personal stuff goes. I'm very excited to continue my learning with Jim and cannot wait for this weeks lesson and hopefully I'll be able to sit in on some more recording sessions this week and I'll be doing whatever I can to pull some weight along in the studio and help out! Until next time, keep the passion for music and the arts alive!
