Today with George I spent roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes reviewing the basic mechanics of microphone placement. This is a crucial part of audio engineering as without proper knowledge of it, a sound recording may not be ideal when worked on in post production. We looked at a variety of microphones and he demonstrated how the materials and size of a room as well as the angle and distance of each microphone are essential factors. The type of microphone (dynamic, condenser, ribbon, etc), positioning of the instrument being recorded, and polar pattern must also be considered. However, there is no one specific right way to place microphones as it's entirely subjective to the sound that the engineer or producer desires. It was also interesting to learn that George has worked with grand pianos, as he played me a CD by Liz Story that he helped produce and said that it took 5 days of studio work just to get an ideal sound as it's a complex instrument. I'm excited for next week as I'll be working with a musician from 6 - 9PM on Monday and have my next lesson on Thursday.
