Equalization Posted on 2015-09-26 by Tyler Stowe

Chapter 13 was all about EQ. EQ is a method that engineers use to rework the frequency response of an audio signal. Frequencies are either boosted or cut. From it's early beginings, it was developed to assist in long distance voltage transmissions for submarine telegraph cables. Further theories and development lead to technology being build and used by multiple telephone companies at the time and also to help improve and reproduce sound for audio playback in the movie business.

For over 150 years, equalizers have gone through many changes. Modern EQs are made up a combination of circuit filters such as, inductors, resistors, and capacitors. EQ parameters include, Center frequncy, Bandwidth(Q), Boost and cut, Hi, low, and band pass filters. Each affects the frequency spectrum in a different way.

There are many types of EQs. Grpahic, Program, Qazi-parametric, and Fully Parametric.

I had trouble with this lesson. Luckily my mentor helped me understand exactly what was going on. He provided examples, hearing tests, and drawings. I had trouble differentiating sounds and he told me not to listen for huge differences but subtle ones. On to the next lession.

MasteringPosted by Tyler Stowe on 2016-06-28

Mastering is the final step in engineering music. Once the mix is completed, the mastering process begins. It is the process of taking and transferring the recorded audio and adding the final touches that all future copies will be made from and distributed... Read More >>
