Reviewing Chapter 1 and More Studio Time Posted on 2014-09-01 by Justin Bruckerhoff

Last week on Wednesday, Aug.27, I went to the studio and reviewed Chapter 1 material with my mentor, Jeff, an hour prior to the vocalists arriving to record vocals for "Heaven's Babies" that we had started on the previous Saturday. Jeff did an awesome job explaing the different concepts from Chapter 1, such as frequency, amplitude, timbre, and also the speed of sound and how it relates to the placement of mics within the studio. He's great with visual explanations. We talked about psychoacoustics and timbre with visual representation using the viola

We wrapped up the chapter 1 review of Sound & Hearing, and once the vocalists arrived we proceeded downstairs and got the Neumann mic set up, made sure the headphone levels were good, and got rolling with recording the vocal tracks on Pro Tools. It didn't take long to get the bass and soprano vocal tracks that were needed for the night, and then the two vocalists headed home. Jeff and I remained in studio for the next 1-1/2 hours editing vocal tracks and going back and touching up some notes on the viola and violin that he noticed were incorrect. He showed me how to fix pitch issues in Melodyne using the pitch draft and modulation options. The two vocalists used way to much vibrato in their singing.  We fixed issues with attack and timing issues where the two vocalists were not in rhythm. He showed me how to adjust the volumes in their voices and where to pan the bass and soprano parts within the mix.

It was another great studio learning experience. I'm looking forward to the next opportunity I get to be in studio. My next lesson is already scheduled for 9/3 and I'm ready!
