This past Sunday on 9/14 I went into the studio once again with Jeff Smith. Prior to reviewing chapter 4 material, he gave me a lesson on automation and equalization. He had to complete post-production mastering on a song called "Mr. Olympia" for some weight lifting competition down in Texas. I have never witnessed the mastering of a song after all of the tracks have been laid down, so it was a fresh new experience. The producer had some tweaks the he requested be done to the vocals, so Jeff went into Pro Tools HD9, adjusted the EQ settings, taking bass and volume levels down in one male vocal track, and ajusting some settins in the female vocal tracks. After completing what the producer requested, Jeff showed me how to send large audio files on transferbigfiles.com. It was cool to get a preview of some course material I'll be seeing in upcoming weeks.
After completing that we went upsatirs to his office and reviewed Chapter 4: Connectivity. We discussed unbalanced and balanced connections and talked about the differences between the two. We talked about RCA, BNC, XLR, ELCO cables and the different protocols that have been developed. We ended the lesson on patch bays where he explained normal, parallel, through, open, and split settings, and he showed how his patch bay is hooked up and he gave me a wiring diagram depicting the overall set up of his studio. It was a short yet informative lesson ending after about 2 hours.
