Judah RatzlaffVictoria Recording Connection

Lesson Seven Posted on 2016-05-18 by Judah Ratzlaff

For lesson seven Brent and I discussed the chapter quiz and the importance of having everything set up prior to a recording session. He usually does all his set up the day before to ensure that everything is working properly and so he can deal with any pressing issues before hand. Planning is definitely one of the largest aspects of doing a recording and if you are not prepared things may not go so well. It is always a good idea to write down everything, especially pertaining to all of the connection in the studio ie. inputs and outputs. A numerical colour coded list of inputs, outputs, and tracks will help you keep everything under control. During a recording session there are too many connections to keep track of in just your head, not to mention all of the other things you need to focus on during a session. Therefore, staying organized is key to a successful and smooth recording. He also stressed the tuning of the instrument in relativity to the microphones you use to record. A well tuned instrument on an average microphone will go a lot farther than an out of tune instrument recorded on an exceptional microphone. EQ, Compression, and other audio effects can always be added on after the fact in order to tighten up or flatten out a sound. Later on in the lesson we began creating a hip hop beat. We started by sampling some drums from Micheal Jackson’s album “Thriller”, as well as some violin segments from Beethoven. We also used some previously recorded drums and cymbals. We are still working on piecing together the beat and going through the creative process, but overall it starting to shape up into something we can work with. We may get a rapper from Vancouver to record some lyrics for us upon completion of the beat.
