Chapter 4 4th Lesson- Gerard Kaplan Posted on 2015-06-16 by Gerard Kaplan

Reading through chapter 4 I learned that there are more connectors than I had ever heard of before. I read about signal flow, which is the path a signal makes from beginning to end. I learned that an audio engineers job is to get the best possible sound. To do so, they must use the correct connectors for different types of studio set ups. I learned that the term ‘cable’ is referred to as a set of wires. I learned the difference between two conductor connectors, 3 conductor connectors, and multi- pin connectors. In section 2, i learned about analog signals and voltage. Analog cables are used to pass low voltage electricity. There are unbalanced and balanced cables. Unbalanced being instrument cables and RCA cables, speaker cables and BNC cables. Balanced cables are things such as XLR cables (microphone cables), TRS cables, TT cables(used in studio patch bays), and snakes which often use multi-pin connectors. In section 4 I read about digital cables such as USBs, MIDI, and FIreWall; all of which I am familiar with. I learned about LightPipe, DigiLink, and ThunderBolt and all of these I was unfamiliar with. I then read about different types of patch bays and which connectors are used for each type of patch bay.

This weeks class with Edwin Ramos was re scheduled from Tuesday, my normal class day, to that Monday. I was able to meet another student who was at his last lesson with Edwin. I watched him finish his final project where his song was being mastered. For me this was a really cool experience because I had always hear the term ‘mastered’ but never knew what was involved in it. I was able to listen to the mix of his song turn into a much more professional sounding track. This was really exciting for me because I record my own music and was able to pick up things here and there to use in my own knowledge. It was also exciting for me because I am looking forward to getting to that point in the program. Watching Edwin work is amazing. I really enjoy soaking up everything he has to offer.
