Thursday July 11th:

I went into Bowtown Music for 2 hours to sit down with Tara and get acquainted with Pro Tools 10. She showed me how to set up the pre-amp (Presonus Firestudio), adjusting the levels so that the audio wouldn't be too loud or too quiet. I was taught how to set up a new track, with a metronome, which I used to record Tara play "The Song of Twilight". She showed me how to record multiple tracks without deleting old ones, and we recorded five takes of the song. Tara showed me a guide to Pro Tools shortcut hot-keys for Macs, and suggested I download it on my computer and begin to study it. I used what I learned about finding proper audio levels on the Presonus Firestudio (which I conveniently have at home as well) to level out the audio on my drum kit so I can record tracks without the audio peaking out.

Wednesday July 17th:

I went into the studio for a lesson with Tara. I brought my microphone set from my drum kit at home, and Tara explained the difference between the different types of microphones, and the different uses for each of them. She then showed me all the different microphones they had there at the studio. She also showed me the design of the studio and control room, and explained how it affects the sound of the recordings. We went on to record about ten takes of Tara playing "The Song of Twilight" again to build my fluency in Pro Tools in creating tracks, and levelling audio.

Thursday July 18th:

I went into the studio to work with Kuba. He showed me how to solder wires, because one of his inputs wasn't working and he thought it was a soldering issue. When we looked at it, it appeared that a grounding wire was touching one of the other wires. So we pushed it out of the way and tested the inputs. Another Recording Connection student, Jeremy, dropped by the studio as well. We worked together to test all of the inputs to make sure they were recording properly. We set up a microphone and ran it through each of the inputs, and would strum a few times on the guitar to test if the input was picking up audio properly. Luckily they were all working properly. Jeremy showed me the manual for the Soundcraft mixer, and showed me where I could find the manual.
