Cole Newman\'s Journal Entries: Sept. 16th-19th Posted on 2013-09-23 by Cole Newman

Monday September 16th:

I went into Bowtown for a lesson with Tara. We continued with a song we've been working on. We added compressors to the vocal track, and one of the guitar tracks. I lowered the level of the congas in the mix because they felt overpowering. She showed me how to send tracks on an AUX bus to add effects, then let me set it up. We put the vocals on a AUX bus to add reverb. I fiddled around with the different reverb plug-ins until I found a sound I liked. I sent both the rhythm guitar and bass guitar on an AUX bus to add reverb to them. The two tracks were similar sounding so we put them on the same bus so the reverb would make them feel locked together in a sense. (2 hours)

Thursday September 19th:

I went into Bowtown to get some work done. I opened my books and started taking notes on Lesson 9. I also put on some videos on mixing and recording tips. They're on Youtube, I was watching a channel called RecoringRevolution. I watched a video about how to use a compressor properly, how to EQ similar sounding instruments so that they stand out individually in the mix, how to use a short delay to get a similar effect as reverb, how to mix using minimal plug-ins, and how to record a whole band with 8 inputs. There was a video that showed how if you increase the initial attack of a certain sound, the whole sound will be perceived as being louder, and will end up feeling more present in your mix. I also watched a couple videos about general rules to follow when buying new equipment, working in the home studio, and using Pro Tools. (2 and a half hours)
