Types of Microphones Posted on 2018-07-09 by Selah Konur

There are four types of microphones: Carbon, Condenser, Dynamic, and Ribbon.  The Carbon microphone was the first electrical device that could transmit sound.  The use of these mics is rarely seen in a studio environment but they can be used in telephones and 2-way radios.  Condenser mics are very versatile and have a frequency response that is more suitable for human hearing than the earlier carbon mics. These mics can be seen in use at a studio, radio station, live sound venue, and on a film set.  The Neumann U47 is one of most revered vocal condenser microphones and there have been many attempts to recreate its design.  Dynamic mics are a work horse and they can handle the harshest of environments.  The Shure SM57/58 dynamic mics have been and can be used in any studio or live sound situation. In fact we have heard its application on snare drums, vocals, guitar cabs and just about anything and everything. Its use seems to be unlimited. Finally we have Ribbon mics.  They are known for their ability to capture high frequency detail without sounding aggressive or as harsh as a condenser mic.  They can be used in place of dynamic or condenser mics depending on the application and use.
