Mics are key to everything, bad mics, bad placement, or wrong type used at wrong time, and its not going to sound good.

 

Dynamic and condenser mics seem to be the two head hanchos.

 

For electric guitar cardiod dynamic mic should be used, and i prefer  condensers for vocals, but any could be used.

 

It all comes down to personal preference and what sounds good to you.

So test out many different variables until you find the sound your looking for.
