Lesson 3: Posted on 2013-06-11 by Joel Wolahan

June 6th 2013:  Time in 12:00 pm: Time out 6:00 pm:  lesson 3:                                                                                    Today we discussed the Nyquist Therom.  In order for the desired frequency bandwidth to be faithfully encoded in the digital domain the selected sample rate must be at least twice as high as the highest frequency to be recorded.  We then discussed alias frequencies and how you don't want that on your recording it causes a nasty distortion.  We also went over masking its when you have two instruments that are played at the same frequency. We then went over lesson 3 and I was in for a special treat I was able to sit in on a Joe Allan And Isa session with the producer David Snyder present. They were  adding piano and organ on to some of the tracks with one guitar track as well.  They were using a Yamaha S 80 key board and a Hammond C3 organ with the Leslie. To say the least the Hammond sounded so sick David and Joe Allan were playing some really cool Reggie skank beats layered in on the tracks. Then Joe Allan plugged in a Marshall into the expression tower of the Hammond and played it through the Leslie it sounded so good like a guitar organ distortion. Then David added some MIDI Clive tracks that sounded super funky.  He also used an arrpagiated synth on a track which was really cool how he manipulated the time signature to match the triplets to the BPMs. It was definitely an honor to watch a professional musicians and producer.
