June 12 2013: Time in 1:00: Time out 4:00: Lesson #4: Today we went over microphone design, use, and placement. Geoff had 3 mic's set up in the middle of the room which he was using to overdub vocals on a track for "Joe Allan and Isa." He had a Noiman U67 set up on both the right and left side and a Telefunken in the middle. He had both U67 set to cardio and the Telefunken set to Omni, so when Joe Allan and Isa sang harmony parts with both of them positioned at the U67s it resulted in some amazing layering on the track. We then discussed the number one rule when dealing with very expensive mics and the rule is "NEVER touch the any microphone when the pre-amp is still on." Then Alex one of Geoffs apprentices helped show me how to mic a snare drum. The types of mics used were SM57s we placed one two inches above the snare and one about three inches below the snare pointed at the chain to get that effective snare pop. For the full kit he also has two PZMs on the wall behind the kit.
