Lesson 8: Posted on 2013-09-04 by Joel Wolahan

August 30 2013: Time in: 11:00 Time out: 3:00 pm:

Today Geoff bought a new guitar it is 1974 Gretch the same style guitar that the Beatles used. Super sweet guitar he picked up for just 3,000$ dollars. It is in great condition minus the fact that one of the knobs came off when it was shipped and was floating around in the box and damaged the frame of the body a little. It also has these sweet muters at the bottom of the body that makes the strings sound palm muted with out the use of your palm.  After looking at the guitar we discussed proper mic placement and the 4 fundamental micing scenarios, close, distant, accent, and ambient micing.  We also went over the 3:1 rule from what Geoff says you cant go wrong with the 3:1 rule with micing, rules are made to be broken, but this one is a solid guide line. After discussing and reviewing proper mic techniques Geoff showed me some more of the solid mixes he has for Isa and Joe Allans new album its definitely coming together super solid tracks. I also had the pleasure of meeting Ara another student in the program, he is also a bass player and seems really nice. Another great day in the studio.
