Lesson Two (Learning The Ropes) Posted on 2013-04-08 by Ryan Carroll

I have been focusing a lot on LISTENING tothe music that i love, and trying to incoperate that into my work. And by listening, i mean not just rocking it in your car and enjoying it, but actually started to listen for that suttle shaker in the back, or the way those horns pan in and out of each headphone. I started, with kendrick lamar's new album, "Good Kid maad city" frankly just because i have been listening to that a lot lately. The production quality in the album is just so sound, and kendrick is such an unbelievable talented artist. I came away with new ideas on how to transform my music. I started going back to all the old albums that i maybe hadn't listened to in a while. I.E "Marshall Mathers L.P" All Eyes On Me" "The Chronic" Stillmatic" Illmatic" Ready to die" ect ect. i got a lot out of just going back and relistening to all of these and trying to understand why they were great. and what were the qualities that made them so unique and groundbreaking. I'm continuing to try to mold my own style as an artist and a producer, by continuing this process.

Lesson two got a little more in depth than lesson 1. Paul showed me and fred a lot of the first things to do when opening up protoolz and beginning a session. Finding tempo,  opening up your tracks and also how to switch back from grid mode to free recording. We learned a lot about studio architecture how the monitors and speakers are setup in a studio and generally how that works. Paul also went over a song he was working on and showed us how to tweak sounds a little bit, by changing the attack, decay, sustain and release on your sounds, also how to use some of the effects on pro toolz. I can't wait to get back in the studio and do a little bit of recording. I told paul i was working on an album and he told me to bring my stuff in. So i am real EXCITED to get back in the studio and learning some more stuff. I am hoping to be in there as much as possible i absolutely love it. Maybe when i get functional with pro toolz i can help out on sessions or live sets. I can't wait im just trying to learn as much as i can. Paul had a medical emergency this week so wasn't able to get in there this week. but looking forward to this week.
