Intro to Pro Tools and Work! Posted on 2015-05-28 by Kayli Mills

This week I received my copy of Pro Tools! It was probably the most exciting thing I've ever found in my mailbox and I'm so psyched to be able to utilize it! I started using DAWs about 6 years ago, at age 14 and have quite a lot of experience with Adobe Audition. This experience has made learning Pro Tools so much easier. Even a lot of the quick commands are the same or similar so it's been a very smooth transition! I'm definitely glad to be owning the industry standard now, especially cosidering the job opportunities I've stumbles upon recently.

Last week I recieved an e-mail from a studio owner I met at the West Michigan Creative Conference (I was there to network as well as support my boyfriend during his capstone presentation). He owns Protoge Game Studios in Lowell and had recently build a sound booth to inprove the studio's function. He mentioned that he didn't currently have an engineer working there and was interested in finding someone to man the booth, improve it, and help the studio eventually cater to commercial work. Long story short, we talked and found that me working on the studio while being able to utilize it for voice over work and work with a client he had was mutually beneficially. I made quite a bit recording and editing 3 radio spots and a phone recording set and got some great experience. I'm also set to mentor some of the students who are interested in getting into voice acting. It's really great to start working in the industry and being able to apply what I'm learning as I go.

At River City this week Austin was working on quite a few radio spots, so I was able to learn a lot about the work I was currently doing. We also brought up my mixes for the client and talked about how I could improve them (and what was good of course!) which was incredibly helpful to me. I look forward to learning more in the coming weeks and becoming a much better engineer!
