Studio 713 ( Week 3.4) Posted on 2015-05-21 by De Marcus Perry

Paul Wall, Johnny Dang, Beat King, and The Sauce Twins, came through the studio for a video shoot the past week, and I had a chance to assist with getting the speakers in. The experience was almost surreal. Im becoming more familiar with Pro Tools 10 on the most basic level, but the lead engineer John is speeding up the process by giving us recording lessons in pro tools to help us become more aware of what all goes into managing a session with a client. This week I learned the difference between digital and analogue in terms of the gear that we use. The board in studio B is a digital board sending a signal of 1 and 0, which is basically a on and off signal to the computer. When you are in Pro Tools the board sends a 1/On signal to the computer and the faders will jump into postion to let you know that it is in sync. The Avalon Pre Amp is a great example of an analogue peice of hardware because it deals with voltage being passed through the tube which gives its sound a unique character. Yesterday I assisted John in recording the Bass by plugging it into the Avalon, and adjusting the gain until it was between -16 and -6 db averaging out at  -10db full scale. We've started a project that will allow all interns to give our own interpretation to a mix we've been working on. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.
