Knowing what you doing as an engineer Posted on 2012-04-09 by Travis Irvin

Recording is not everything, you need to know what you are doing. You need to know mic placement and know how to take the right levels and make sure the artist does not clip. If you want to know what level, I recommend to get a good sound recording around -6 and -3. Never go above these levels or eventually the artist will clip in his/her vocals. Also have a good ass compressor, I advise everybody to get the Avalon VT-737SP. This processor will give you the sound you need in all situation. It comes with Eq, Compressor, and 48v Phantom power. Since the phantom power comes with it, there's no need to get a separate pre amp. Just punch that button and it will give you all the power you need for your mic unless your mic comes with its own power supply then you don't need to punch that button. It cost a grip but just save up to get it don't waste your money on other bullshit products. I'm telling you what you need to be successful. Have a great mic, that's another important thing to have. You'll know if its great or not because how much you spent on it. You buy cheap, your recodings gone sound cheap. Get the best money can buy.
