There are 3 different type of mics. You have the dynamic, condenser, and the ribbon mic. The dynamic mic can be for recording a group of people playing instruments and just recoding instruments. Also the dynamic mic never requires phantom power, 48v. Turning on the phantom power can possibly blow out the mic. The next mic is the condenser, which has a large dyphram and requires phantom power, 48v. Because it requires so much power the track that's record ready has to be muted or you will blow out your mic, so make sure your track is muted before you turn on 48v phantom power. The next one is the ribbon mic which is somewhat similar to the dynamic mic but is way more sensitive. Its good on recording instruments also depending how well you place the mic. With all that being said, just in case you didn't know, all microphones require a preamp to boost the signal with phantom power or not, so remember that. So get a real good preamp, I recommend the avalon or the golden age.
